Protect your family and home against the mighty dust mite
(NC)—Although impossible to see with the naked eye, dust mites can pack a powerful punch, causing a range of discomforts from skin reactions, to allergies, to triggering asthma.
Dust mites are the main allergic component of household dust and as a result, they cannot be completely eliminated from the average Canadian home. With some simple steps, however, you can dramatically reduce them and ease the discomfort of allergy and asthma sufferers in the family.
Solutions start with your heating system. As many as 95 per cent of Canadian homes depend on forced air heating systems and since this method circulates dust, allergens, and other pollutants around the home, we need to be particularly vigilant.
“If homeowners are building, renovating or expanding, we highly recommend they consider installing a radiant heating system, which is engineered to provide clean air and a healthy home environment,” says John Goshulak the heating ambassador for Beautiful Heat. “Radiant heating uses a ductless design, providing warmth without the need for fans, blowers, or vents in the floors. With radiant heating there will be no more drafts pushing dust particles throughout the house, giving you and your family less exposure to airborne allergens.”
In addition to the heating system, the bedroom is another battleground in the fight against dust mites, since they live in bedding, upholstery and carpets.
Where possible, carpets, rugs, and heavy curtains should be removed from bedrooms, experts say. Any remaining rugs and carpets should be vacuumed at least once a week. Toys, books and clothes all collect dust when they are left lying around. Try to keep bedrooms free of clutter. All surfaces in the bedroom, and throughout the home, should be dusted with a damp cloth once a week. Finally, all bedding should be washed in hot water and dried in a hot dryer every week.
